The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), on behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), invites applications for the position of Research Associate. The main purpose of the job is to support the field implementation of the PAFIE-BSFLÂ project, which focuses on evaluating innovations that could accelerate the production of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) as an alternative feed protein ingredient for small-scale farmers in Kenya and Tanzania.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Work together with the technical leads to support field study design and execution.
- In Dar es Salaam and/or Arusha, supervise the BSFL technology experiments carried out by BSF Breeding and Chanzi Ltd. and gather experimental data to assess the effectiveness of BSF technologies.
- Compile information on the types, amounts, and seasonality of the waste feedstock streams that Chanzi Ltd. uses to produce BSFL.
- To evaluate the financial viability of the BSF enterprises utilizing BSFL technologies, gather economic and financial data at baseline, midline, and endline from Chanzi Ltd. and the BSF breeding company (BSF Breeding).
- Get economic and financial information from feed manufacturers who use BSFL as a protein source in their feedstuffs.
- Oversee the gathering of data for on-farm experimental trials to evaluate the effects of compound feeds based on BSFL and the impact of BSFL-derived frass on maize and legume forages.
- Assist in preparing progress reports, data-sharing agreements, and applications for research ethics.
- Participate in the compilation of reports, publications, and presentations as well as the analysis and interpretation of research data.
- Organize and lead project activities and stakeholder involvement, such as holding workshops and feedback sessions and organizing farmers for BSFL technological interventions.
- carry out any additional tasks that the supervisor assigns you.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A master’s degree in agricultural economics, cattle sciences, or a similar discipline.
- Three years or more of expertise working on livestock value chains, including waste management and climate-smart solutions that increase production.
- Professional certification that is pertinent.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to cooperate in a multidisciplinary team.
